Your home is by far the most valuable thing you own, so it is essential to make sure that it is properly insured against potential disasters such as burglary, fire, flood, subsidence and accidental damage.

There are two types of home insurance which can be purchased either separately or as a package. Discounts are often offered if you purchase both buildings and home contents cover from the same insurer.

Buildings Insurance

This insures the actual bricks and mortar of your home together with any permanent fixtures such as fitted kitchens and bathrooms. Having suitable home insurance will be a condition on your mortgage when you take it out but you are not obliged to buy cover from your mortgage lender, which can include a hefty mark-up.

The correct level of buildings insurance should cover the full cost of rebuilding your home - not it's current market value.

Contents Insurance

Home contents insurance protects all your personal possessions and covers the cost of replacing items such as furniture, carpets and electrical equipment. It is important not to underestimate the value of your possessions and remember to inform your insurer about any expensive individual items as you may need separate cover for more valuable items such as antiques or jewellery.

Recent research reveals that one in six homeowners has no buildings insurance and one in four has no insurance for their home contents. A further one in five are at risk of being underinsured because they are unsure of the value of their home contents.

Being uninsured could cost you tens of thousands of pounds, so it isn't worth taking a chance.
