With growing waiting lists and the NHS under ever increasing pressure,
many people are choosing to take out private medical insurance and
assume more responsibility for their healthcare.
Private medical insurance covers the cost of private treatment for
curable short term illness or injury. It does not usually cover
pre-existing or chronic conditions such as diabetes or multiple
sclerosis.
There are a number of different policies available:
Budget
This type of policy is basic and usually only covers inpatient treatment.
It does not cover outpatient treatments, consultant's fees or diagnostic tests.
Standard
This type of policy covers full inpatient treatment together with a range of outpatient treatments. Specialist consultations, diagnostic procedures and alternative therapies will also be covered up to specified limits that vary between insurers.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive policies offer a full healthcare solution for complete peace of mind. This type of policy usually covers full inpatient treatment, unlimited outpatient treatment, consultant's fees, specialist scans and diagnostic tests. The policy will also typically offer other benefits such as dental cover, chiropody, home nursing costs, recuperative care and incidental hospital expenses.
Opting for private health insurance allows you the flexibility to
tailor your healthcare cover to your exact needs.
