If you don't want to be stranded on the hard
shoulder, it makes sense to arrange breakdown cover. Being towed home if you vehicle breaks down is just
another form of insurance.
The breakdown insurance sector is dominated
by big names such as the AA and RAC, but you should shop around as there
are many cheaper alternatives available. Some insurance companies also
offer breakdown cover as an option with car insurance policies.
Essentially there are two types of car
breakdown policy. The leading companies in this sector are the AA and the RAC
who use their own
patrols to attend broken down customers, whereas companies such as Green
Flag offer branded breakdown services to insurers and
other providers. With the latter, the work the recovery patrols carry
out is covered under your policy.
Other providers offer "pay-and-claim" deals that use local
garages for roadside recovery or home assistance, but the customer has
to pay the mechanic on the spot and reclaim the charge from the car
breakdown provider.
It is important to choose a policy to suit your particular needs. Some
companies offer breakdown insurance which covers the policyholder whilst
travelling as a driver or passenger with any vehicle, whilst other
companies will insure the vehicle itself, which means that anyone
driving it will be covered, regardless of whether or not they are the
policyholder.
